Is online gambling legal in Indonesia?

Online gambling is strictly illegal in Indonesia. The legal basis for this prohibition is multi-layered. This ban is extended into the digital space by Law No. 11 of 2008 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions (the ITE Law), as amended by Law No.

19 of 2016. Specifically, Article 27(2) of the ITE Law criminalizes the act of knowingly distributing, transmitting, or making accessible electronic information or documents that have gambling content. The penalties for violating this are severe, as outlined in Article 45(2), and can include imprisonment for up to six years and a fine of up to IDR 1 billion.

The government enforces this through the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo), which actively blocks access to gambling websites and has removed millions of pieces of gambling-related content from the internet.
