Crypto betting in South Africa falls into a legal gray area but is largely considered illegal under the current regulatory framework. The primary legislation governing gambling, the National Gambling Act of 2004, explicitly prohibits “interactive gambling,” which is interpreted to include all forms of online casino games such as slots, poker, and bingo.

While the act does not specifically mention cryptocurrencies, the ban on interactive gambling applies regardless of the payment method used. Therefore, betting with cryptocurrencies on online casino platforms is not permitted. The law imposes severe penalties for both operators and players who engage in illegal online gambling, with fines of up to R10 million or 10 years of imprisonment.

Although there have been no widespread reports of individuals being prosecuted for playing at offshore crypto casinos, the government has a history of confiscating winnings from illegal online gambling activities. The Financial Intelligence Centre has also issued warnings about the risks associated with crypto assets, including their use in money laundering and terrorism financing, further complicating the legal status of crypto gambling.
